Yes, I’m about to weekly-picks my own writing. However, I will say the Matthew Shipp feature we’re running at Free Jazz Blog this week, written by myself and Gary Chapin, is well worth your time.
The links above are for the reviews we each wrote. I covered Clifford Allen’s book, which is remarkable. I can’t recommend it enough as a work of writing about improvised music and art. Meanwhile, Gary did a wonderful job bridging 30 years of Shipp’s career, from the early trio set to the brand-new solo performance.
The above photo is my own personal copy of Singularity Codex, which, as you can see from the well-worn corners, has already been read and re-read many times. Much like Cisco Bradley’s William Parker biography Universal Totality, there’s so much in Allen’s book to revisit, whether I’ve been listening to an album and want to go over the notes on that specific recording, or I’m thinking about music in general and want to go over something Rob Brown said. Like both albums, which I’ve also listened to many times each, there is yet more to revisit, the nature of Shipp contains multitudes (naturally).
