Picks and Misc. for July 27
Somewhat hilariously, it took until this week (and an email to label founder Nat Baldwin to confirm) to realize the great Tripticks Tapes is named for Ann Quin’s novel. And with that revelation comes the first of this week’s recommendations.
Skultura by Nick Dunston (Tripticks Tapes) I wrote about Dunston’s outstanding Atlantic Extraction a couple years ago, and this new one… wow. Just, wow.
Our/s Bouture(s) by Anne Gillis + XT (Art Into Life)1 As bold and defiant as last year’s album with Pat Thomas, Paul Abbott and Seymour Wright (as XT) are just on some whole other world with Gillis.
(Un)Prepared Pieces for Guitar and Trumpet by Marcelo dos Reis & Luís Vicente (Cipsela) Not sure how many U.S. listeners are tuned into what’s happening in Portugal, but it’s one of the most exciting scenes right now. Hope to visit in person sometime soon.
A few years ago, Art Into Life also released a massive box set of Gillis’s work going back to the early 1980s.
